  • Debra Johnson
    I am a wife and a mother to an 11 year old daughter, and an infant son. * NO...I'm not young...I've just S P R E A D out my child bearing years!:) I am an ART NUT by day and a 'wanna be' mom and wife by night and weekends. I say 'wanna be' due the fact that I am always looking for ways to improve in this department and have been very fortunate by being blessed with some fantastic friends who are terrific mothers that inspire me forward. I thought I had it all together until this new 'cutie patootie' came into my life...and now ANYTHING GOES for getting life, family, and art all into a 24 hour period. 4:00 pm........is as good as 4:00 am ~ the lights are always ON at my house. My art background is in ....simply being poor most of my life:) * Hehe ~ One MAKES... what they can't buy!! *And.... you learn to see beauty in OTHER things.... OTHER than what's in the store:) I am very blessed to be able to stay home and create an income with my weird 'what-nots'. A few years ago I had a cottage art studio called The Little Yellow House. We held many art classes, and rented the house out for events. It was filled... floor to ceiling.... with bizarre and wonderful creations!! * My favorite DECOR was the laughter of friends!! So now each week I join the other two Warehouse Artchix in the warehouse to create fun and colorful WHIMSIES together!! I LOVE this time with these 2 free, fabulous spirits!
  • Sandra Feazel

I am an interior designer by day and an artist every chance I get. My back ground is in fine art and I spent my college years traveling and studying in Europe, an incredible experience that I hope to return to someday! I am blessed to be able to create everyday either in my design work or in my Studio. Each week I join the other two Warehouse Artchix in the warehouse to create together...feeding of the creative energy of some fabulous, fun and funky females that I so thankfully call dear friends! We hope you enjoy our art, mainstream it is not, it is just for fun and meant to make your heart soar!!!

Ooooh La La! Back From Paris...

Gigis_house_020Well, actually....I am back from my stay in the Paris Room at my friend Gigi's house!!  She and her hubby went to New Orleans for the Jazz Festival and I got the honor ( a wonderful honor) of house sitting for them.  Gigi, is not from Paris, but she should be!!! She loves Paris and all things Parisian!!  In fact, she had just returned from a buying trip in Paris where she scoured the local flea markets and antique markets for goodies.  Her home here is just so lovely, so Gigi!  She thinks of everything, she even left me a box of Parisian Chocolates to enjoy with my wine..( she made a trip to get all my favs in wine and cheese!!).  She even had my favorite coffee for me and a yummy flavored creamer.  She had stacks of books and magazines for me to relax with.

Gigis_house_018_2

This is one of the walls in the Paris Room,

Gigis_house_019 Gigis_house_001  Gigi loves stuff, just like I love stuff...more is more is our motto!  She had little bits of her Paris trip in every room, so it was like a treasure hunt to go room to room and find what was new.

I had a wonderful weekend of relaxing, having breakfast poolside each morning...Gigis_house_023 even the dogs or "boys" as Gigi calls them, enjoyed the mornings poolside...here is Bandit checking out the water..Gigis_house_025

On Sunday I stayed poolside most of the day and enjoyed the beautiful weather, even contemplated swimming, even in the cold water...but just basking in the sun was wonderful. An absolute blessing for me...no teenager calling "MOM!" or no one to think about...just me and the quite cool water and the warmth of the sun.  Sounds simple, but truly PRICELESS to me!  I called Gigi on Saturday morning right after I watched the sun come up on the pond behind her house and told her she was truly blessed to live in this home and have that view!!! She agreed, she does not take it for granted, she is blessed!!!  Well, I am off to paint on some things to use for a display in a children's shop...one of my new projects!  One of my favorite clients has purchased a children's shop and asked me to help do a makeover of the existing space....is that a dream or what!!! I am loving working on it, so fun since whimsical really does describe my favorite creating style!!!  This client is a dream to work with, she is just so kind and I love spending time with her!! She reminds me of Eva LaRue off of CSI Miami! She looks like she could be her sister!!!  She is beautiful inside and out....if she is reading this, I hope she knows how much I value her friendship and her trust in letting me participate in her new adventure.....she is a blessing in my life!! Well, I better get busy and make some whimsy!!! Have a great weekend and HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to all you fab mom's out there!!! -Sandra

Hey Deb, thinking of you on this your first Mothers Day with little Jack!!! Hope your day is extra special and filled with blessings both big and small!!

Now for the good news!!!

I am headed off this evening for a weekend of relaxing and revival!!!

By8 <thought this pic looked like a good visual for the mode I am headed into!!!

I am house sitting for my friend Gigi while she goes to the Jazz Festival in New Orleans.  She has a "fabulous" (her fav word!!!) house with a beautiful pool and outside entertaining area complete with t.v. and fireplace....she has a collection of music (great Jazz and my era of stuff) that you can have playing in any room in the house or all through the house.  I am taking my camera and going to pretend it is a vacation....my daughter is joining me there for Saturday night...a girls night for sure....and to me (a single mom) this is like a vacation!!! I am staying in the "Paris Room"...each of Gigi's rooms has a name and the decor fits the name.  She even called to take my order for wine and cheeses!!! She is the hostess with the mostess and to stay at her home is a much needed get away for me!!! I bought a new book to sit out by the pool and read...she left me a stack of new magazines....and I will be kept company by her two Jack Russell terriers, Scooter and Bandit (who have their own room...all decorated in canine style!!!) So, watch for pics of this weekend getaway very soon!!! Have a great weekend and remember, it all turns out for good in the end!!! God really does have a plan!!! -and ThANKs for letting me vent about work....made it easier to deal with-Sandra

The Rest of the Story.....the week gets rosey!!!!

By7 O.k., sorry to keep everyone hanging there...the client later calls me to tell me that the painter (A.A.'s painter not mine) has made new samples and she likes one of them.  I guess he got busy after I left and did four samples for her...she chose one of those.  Sooooooooo, I have to call my faux guy and tell him the job is off ( I hated to do that to him!).  The client also said that the contractor (A.A.) had told her that I said she needed to redo the marble flooring in the kitchen and breakfast area and also that I had the perfect porcelain tile to go in there....huh????? In the beginning the client made it clear that the flooring stayed and was not part of the plan in the remodel...after all she has it throughout the downstairs area.  So next I get a message from her asking for me to bring over the sample of the tile....you know the one that I told the contractor about...NOT!!! So, being gracious (designers are that way!) I go pick four samples for her for flooring choice...porcelain would not have been my choice at all!!!  Now days natural stone is so affordable and so beautiful...if you are using granite and then a high end marble for the island....you need something just as dressy on the floor, but subtle enough to not take the spotlight away from the marble island top......I really do give up!  I got a call that she loved one of the samples, so next the contractor calls me up and thanks me and says this is going to be a real showplace.....and that it is really all coming together.  He can't wait to show other clients this project.....I am still here scratching my head and wondering what kind of game this is we are playing!!!  I have since returned to the job to see what is going on...the same painter is still there, although not talking to me now....so I must be the bad guy here.....and the cabinets have not been touched, although there are two doors that have a milky, almost limey green wash over them and then a band of metallic that looks like a child smeared it on!!!   Sooooooooooooooo, I really do know this is sooooo unprofessional of me to vent in public about a client...I did not mention names here... and for all of my clients that do read this blog, I adore you all (you know it is not you I am talking about!!), appreciate you even more now, and am back on track focused on your projects (yes...andrea I will have figures for your beautiful bedding by the end of this day and yes, Cari, I will have the estimate to your Dad for the remodel and exterior projects......and I'm looking forward to next week and seeing or talking to all of you!!! -Sandra

Whining Weekend---Part II

So sorry to make you all wait for the rest of the story about the contractor that I will name A.A. (give you a hint, the first word is arrogant...bet you can guess the next part!!!) Well, first I must provide you with a picture of the progress in my Living Room, it is still coming together....slowly but surely:

Living_room_002 The crinkled piece of silk is really not that green, it has an iridescent look, with green and aqua threads.  The two scalloped stands are from a recent trip to HomeGoods (always find goodies there for me!!).  The Rose print is one of my mom's, as is the peely paint chest (she has great pieces of painted furniture!).  The old bird cage is one I bought off of ebay, so my friend Nancy could have the stand for her chandelier...I have some of my brown transferware in it with some sweet pink birdies:

Living_room_005

Then I have a set of Italian stacking tables that I adore (my mom gave these to me years ago, I have used them in just about every room of my home!).  I really want slip covers for my two sofas, but have not found just what I am looking for at the price I want (single mom budget priced!!) something in Linen would be great.Living_room_004

I am thinking that eventually I will cover the shade on this little lamp (mom's) and maybe even use a chalky glaze over the wall color to soften it....time will tell on that, may just need more stuff on the walls (Lord knows I have stuff!).

OK>OK> I will get on with the story....I return on Thursday to see the cabinet progress, the painter has just a few glazed...color looks good, so I leave.  On Saturday, the client calls and is having a fit about the glaze... I ask if she has called the contractor to tell him. Oh no!  I am the only one she called, she thinks it is too brown, and I need to fix it...the painter told her I came by and said it was great...well, I did on Thursday when he had done just a little.  Well, I guess the little guy's arm just got tired and he must have started slapping the stuff on heavy, really messy!   This is what I arrived to on Monday morning, I ask for a piece of sand paper, slightly sanding the glaze on one door with fine grit paper....not helping, discuss that several parts of the cabinets appear darker than others, show him some messy edges....he says the client wants to see more of the green.  Now picture this, the walls are Juniper green (a brighter shade of sage), the ceilings are a white with a hint of the sage tint ....the granite is a mix of chocolate brown, terra cotta and russet red, with an undertone of sage.  The island is more russet and terra cotta in the marble color.  I will have to snap a pic of it to show you later.  So, the soft sage cabinets with the "too brown glaze" would have been perfect....if he had not done such a messy job and been so heavy handed. So we agree that if he rubs a sage wash over them, it might soften the color (and hopefully all the splotches and drips he has made!).  At this point, I want to cry!!!  It is so out of my control...what with trying to deal with this contractor and his idea of "good".  While the painter is gone to get the glaze, the marble island top arrives and is ready to install.  I end up pulling my copy of the cabinet plans to show them where the sink installs and to tell them where the faucet installs...duh, I think this might be the contractors job to show up for this!!  Woops! I almost forgot to tell you the other part of the bad weekend that got me to whining ....my ex-husband shows up to take my son shopping for his 16th birthday on Sunday, only to announce that he is filing Bankruptcy(??????-he makes about 5 times what I do and has only himself to care for!!?????)  on Monday!!!! and get this!!! He needs the info on the house for the attorney.  Well, for those of you that know me and what all my divorce entailed (another soap opera all it's own!!!-really.) Truly I could have bought an SUV for what I spent on that divorce...and the one thing I fought for was the house, so my kids could grow up in the same home that they had always lived in (my thought was that it would be less chaotic for them, to have that stability in their lives, since their world was being rocked)  Well, in the divorce I was awarded the house..house payment and all!  but now he wants to know the mortgage company and the account number!!!  So I started off very early Monday morning on the phone with my attorney and my mortgage company!!! (enough of that for now...back to the client/contractor story) just wanted to give you a real feel for the craziness of the weekend that headed into the beginning of a new week!  Now, the painter comes back and applies a sample of the green glaze over the one door...I point out some "blotchy" places and say "none of this...smooth, soft).  O.k., I leave the jobsite with a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach!!!  What do I do...how do I call the client and say "this guy does not know what he is doing..not to mention that the contractor doesn't either...they are using water base products on a job that should be done in an enamel and an oil glaze so it will last in a high traffic area. Cari is with me in the van and she is appalled at the glaze job. Now remember Cari worked for me for years when I had a faux finish business...she said I would never have let her get away with work that bad...and she is right.  I am a perfectionist, I don't want one spot left that is not done right...clean edges and corners are a must. But now I am working with my hands tied behind my back....what to do????? Well, I call the client and tell her that he is making a new sample for her, but I also tell her that his work is not quite up to par...he is a painter after all and he has never done cabinets before...glazed some walls, but not cabinets.  She agrees that he is not the one to do the glaze. I tell her that I have a fabulous artist that does all my faux finishes and that she would love his work.  She asks me to call him and schedule for him to come redo the cabinets...now this is about 1:00.  The client tells me that she will call the contractor to let him know this.   I am thinking, YES, we will finally get this job rolling and looking great. So I call and schedule my guy...I also call the contractor to tell him that this is a difficult position, and that I am having my guy come on Wednesday.

     OH MY GOSH!!! He was mad!  He said his guy was the best and that he could do anything ( he loves to throw in that they do million dollar homes, once he even said billion dollar homes...who says that???), whatever the client wanted.  He also tells me..."What do you want, for me to have my guys clean up and pack up and leave the jobsite!"  I get off the phone....(sorry guys...to be continued later...I do believe I hear some yawns out there in blogland.  I promise to tell more very soon! ) -Sandra

Hey - no fair!

Sandra, I'm on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the rest of the story.... WHAT happened??

I could NOT do what YOU DO at all....for so many reasons, but one of them being...this story that you are sharing....you show such patience and grace through it.....I would like to think I could muster that up, but something tells me that I might stick my tongue out and chant ...

" Na-na-na-na-boo-boo, I'm the designer..........NOT YOU...." * oh - but I'd say it with a smile and more like a 'sing-song' version...so that I don't SCARE him.....you know how scary I can be.

Now that I've revealed my more grown up side.... I will change the topic so that no more of that comes out....

I'll provide the intermission to Sandra's story with a 'follow up' to a blog a did a few weeks ago. I promised to show a picture of the baby plate my mom did for my daughter when she was born...here it is......

004_2   005

Her room was done in pink and yellow when she was a little girl ~ this matched beautifully!

See the fabulous detail in her work...for anyone that has ever painted ceramics....you KNOW how difficult the paint can be....

008

I just LOVE the details....

You can find her work at: The Father's Hand ~ check her out!!

Okay......and now back to the story......................

Sandra...it's all yours babe!

Whining Weekend!!!

I will start of with the good part:

Roses_and_peony_001 My roses are all in bloom and the shades of pink, fuschia and red are gorgeous!!!! Is there really anything as beautiful as a rose???  Well, maybe a peony-Roses_and_peony_004_2

And the fragrance...DIVINE!!!

Pretty enough to paint a picture of!!!  O.k., that's enough of the good stuff, now lets get down to the rough stuff that came my way this weekend...First, my crazy chaotic Living Room was a priority on my list...the painting is done, now to decide on what furniture stays and what goes.....rearranged about four times...still not satisfied....and in the midst of all of that...I get a phone call from a client that is upset...she hired a contractor for a kitchen remodel, who ended up being someone I went to high school with...did not know him personally, but did remember that he had beautiful blue eyes...seems that is his finest point and it all goes downhill from there.  He has a real attitude, does not like working with a designer (me!) and talks to me like I am an idiot!!!  (I might be organizationally challenged, but an idiot I am not!!!).  I take my work very seriously...I feel that it is my job to listen to what the client wants, see what they want to keep and discuss new ideas, all the while remembering it is there home...my goal is for the finished product to be a reflection of them...after all it is their home.  I do not use a cookie cutter approach to design.  Well, this guy (won't tell you what I nicknamed him!!!) has quite an ego, he "has done million dollar homes and this is the way he does it!"...in other words, he does things his way, and his workers don't know how to do it any other way. I fought to get a copy of his plans for the cabinets and the layout...seems he thinks he is a designer too! But no, I finally have to get the homeowners plans to see the layout of the cabinets. I help the client choose a granite, then marble for an island top, then glass tiles and a custom art glass inset, then we select the paint color for the cabinets..etc...I order her sinks (very expensive sinks, really expensive!!!) of which only one fits, because the contractor has reduced the size of the island and forgotten to mention it to anyone except the granite fabricator...so the prep sink in the island is too big....25% restocking fee to return...I go get another smaller sink...tell me do you think 12 x 12 is really a usable size sink??? By the time you get the faucet in...you might be able to fill a glass with water or wash a lemon in it!!!  Anyway, get all that taken care of, while the contractor tells the client I have not given him tile selection or paint colors...which I had already faxed to him (remember, he can't be bothered to meet with me!)....then he tells me I need to get a picture of what I want for the faux finish for the cabinets to his guy ( he tells me this guy is the best, works only for him)...I go meet with the guy, .....seems he just wanted me to tell him a color of glaze, preferably off of the Home Depot Behr glaze chart that he whips out!  You have got to be kidding me...now don't get me wrong, any "do it yourselfer" can go get glaze at Home Depot...but when you are doing it professionally there are some much better products.  I look at his chart and there was not one color close to what I wanted...so I tell him I will do a sample and then bring it to him and tell him what I used.  I made a sample mixing a Burnt Sienna and a Mocha glaze, then brush it over a soft sage green base coat....then on the highlighted edges, I use a copper glaze and then a gold glaze, just barely touching the highest points, to catch the light.  I drive to the jobsite the next day and deliver my sample, feeling very generous, I also take him the glazes that he will need including the metallics which are very costly...but I wanted him to have the right product... To be continued tomorrow....don't want you to fall asleep in the middle of my whining!!!

A Big Fall...but a great smile!!!

Okay ~ I just have to post a little 'something' here because it's been hard to look at my daughter's sickly body every time I pull up this site - *pooh:(~ We've GOT to make that picture scroll down a bit:)

I'm hoping Sandra posts some FABULOUS pictures of her makeover this weekend...bringing my last post.... much further down the page:) I CAN NOT believe that a week has passed already...it was JUST Monday!!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
So, this week my husband's grandmother - who we call Nanny came for a visit. She lives in Tampa and doesn't visit often. We ADORE her.....one of those hilarious women, who can make a great story out of anything ...and always has the PERFECT two-bits to offer to any situation. Every day has a 5:30pm happy hour in it...and she loves to sit and gab. She's done a lot of living, so her stories just keep you captivated!!
Img_5008_2
Nanny & sister-in-law at visit last year.....
Nanny arrived on Tuesday and fell outside of Mimi’s (mother-in-law) house about 30 minutes after arriving – she fell face forward on the stone while coming down some steps. She spent the day in the hospital and then the next 2 days having multiple tests run.....an MRI,  a CAT scan, a dentist, etc.....they all took a look at her.
We saw her last night and she is BLACK & PURPLE…her entire face, lips ,chin, forehead…* she broke her nose and cracked some ribs…she’s 80+…..both her knees are black and the palms of her hands are missing skin…one arm is solid black as well – she looks horrible( * though, she never looks horrible to me)….but was in good spirits – believe it or not. She went on and on about how she’d bought new clothes and used whiting strips on her teeth for 3 weeks – because she planned to look gorgeous while here….she wanted us to think she was just a real knock out!!
So in the midst of all the visiting the other night, she’d smile really big and say “ But don’t my teeth look really white"?? Which was hilarious, ( and she intended for it to be so) as she smiled out at you with black eyes and black swollen lips.
Like I said...the woman can make anything funny!!
Her precious sense of humor is priceless!!
What a terrible thing to have happen to you when you’ve traveled to spend a social visit. She even planned to stay to 2 weeks – a really long trip - * which she never does!! So it makes everything soooo tragicL
We love her and will take her in any form at all:)
** and her teeth were very sparkly and white!!
*I think Nan deserves a toast......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Okay Sandra...load us up with pictures of the new digs!

* Nite, Debra

April 22, 2008

Good Morning!!

I'm up early and blogging...

Whooo- woooo! Getting a jump on the day ~ NOT something I do often.....

So, I'm on the edge of my seat with Sandra's makeover....this girl can decorate like no bodies business...so the sky is the limit for her creativity!!

Here is a small visual into my last week.....

Sweet daughter home with STREP throat - yuk!! Ugh!! I think she was on the couch like this for 3 days...*we did give her a blanket.

001

.....and a new one of mom and baby.....4.5 months

A004

* yes, my house is filled with PLASTIC again....* can't they make those toys in "home' colors??

As I type I'm looking at 4 different brilliantly colored plastic gyms in my den...some for lying down, others for sitting up, some swing.....and one that does ALL those things....*sheesh!

So...I have an announcement.....

You can now also find me at: http://www.thelittleyellowhouse.typepad.com/

I'm ditching my website and moving in here permanently:)~

I hope you'll stop by from time to time...

I promise to put some artwork on there and not just fill the pages with jibber-jabber.

** okay...perhaps, SOME jibber-jabber...some art....some life.....

I'll just include the 'good stuff'.......

April 20, 2008

YIKES!!!!! I've created a monster!!

Why is it when we start a project in our homes, it becomes a major undertaking??? So...I decided to have the living room painted, one of my painters had some time ....then I decided to add beadboard to the backs of my bookcase...saw one in a magazine like that and loved the look...Jobs_066

The wall color is Peppermint Tea...

Jobs_069 it is more the lighter color in the pic...fresh, summertime...yes, does it go with anything I had in the living room?   No!!! Nada!!! and one more thing...Jobs_070 This is not the way to install crown molding!  I had to research online and print off directions...off to try again!! Any moral support and or prayers at this time would be welcome!!!  I really do think I create chaos.....ya think???? -Sandra
